ENGINEERING SERVICES

RAE provides complete engineering services for high voltage power system projects from 15kV to 345kV.

RAE specializes in substation design projects for utilities and private generation developers. Typical project scopes range from replacement of breakers, transformers, and relays in existing stations to full blown detailed design for new greenfield substations.

Our services cover the full lifecycle of any given power project from conceptual design, interconnection application and studies, site selection, construction drawings, site inspections, and witness testing. Many of our projects start with initial interconnection support for generation and storage developers. RAE has submitted over 60 interconnection applications to NYISO, NYS Utilities, ISONE and PJM over the course of the past few years. We are able to continue to add value to our customers projects by proceeding into detailed engineering design when the project reaches that development milestone. RAE often stays with our clients projects through commercial operation to make sure it's a success. Our customers find great value in the technical continuity that RAE brings to the project lifecycle.

Selection of Services

Typical engineering services that can be provided by RAE are:

Substation Design

  1. Conceptual planning for permitting stage development
  2. Major equipment selection and specification
  3. Issued for bid packages / Cost estimates.
  4. Complete issued for construction drawings, Protection and control, Civil, SCADA, Grounding, Structures, Calculations packages.
  5. Power Studies, Protection Coordination, Arcflash, Cable ampacity, Voltage drop, CT saturation, lightning protection.

Power Generation Projects

  1. Wind farm collection system design and power studies.
  2. Solar power plant, utility scale interconnection, DC collection system design.
  3. Battery Energy Storage Facility design, battery containers, DC side cable raceways, power converters, transformers and MV cabling, interconnection station, gentie line, communications network.

Site Selection

  1. Provide technical guidance for the criteria of a good point of interconnection to the utility grid for generation or storage plants.
  2. Provide assessment of utility infrastructure around proposed project sites and provide guidance on interconnection options and potential project sizes.
  3. Analyze potential sites to develop conceptual interconnection facility designs that can be used to estimate the required infrastructure and cost of a project' interconnection facilities. This design and layout will mature into a site plan to be used for the interconnection application of a project.

Interconnection Study Process Support

  1. Prepare interconnection application to provide technical information and PE sealed one line diagrams.
  2. Perform power factor calculations and equivalent impedance calculations required for the application.
  3. Identify what information is required and must be provided by other parties such as manufactures or modeling consultants.
  4. Participate in the scoping meeting with the developer, the interconnecting utility and the grid operator.
  5. Provide any technical follow up information required.
  6. Review the feasibility, system impact and facility study results and interpret them for the developer.
  7. Negotiate options to reduce interconnection costs on behalf of the projects.
